FTJ: Colleen’s Journey 2: Daydreaming

We began 2024 with the daily “You Are a Badass” calendar in our bathroom. Those daily sentiments from Jen Sincero about owning how amazing we really are began to sink in.

We took a road trip to visit our kids in DFW that summer; Shad Helmstetter’s “What to Say When You Talk To Your Self” audio book really clicked for us. Those two authors’ writings began a cascade of events that have truly revolutionized our thinking and our world. We have read and discussed many books since then, all contributing to our journey. (Yes, we have a list of suggested readings.)

We had certainly spent the first 25 plus years of our marriage asleep … moving through the motions of living, but not truly engaging in the powerful and meaningful way we should. While we had always talked about our “one-day” dreams, we had been drifting along, hoping they would come along. We had kept our eyes closed to our potentially rich life. We were finally waking up.

One Saturday afternoon shortly after the school year began, Darrell laid out his vision for Leading Notes to me. He could see the result of a thriving business that incorporated our skills and knowledge in a coaching platform of consulting, video, blogs, books and more. It was amazing. He had such detailed ideas about what we would develop.

I am a pretty pragmatic, organized, PLANNER kind of woman … so, I began asking which should be our first steps. I remember Darrell saying something like, “I bet 2 Days in Ojai with Rob Bell {link} would be so transformative for us.” Since I had a vague notion of what that might be like and how much it meant to Darrell, I told him to investigate dates and costs. He returned to me about 20 minutes later with a full itinerary and breakdown of costs. I decided then and there to claim our

badass-ness and said, “Let’s go!” It was three weeks of insane preparation for me to miss four days of teaching, but it was one of the best decisions we have made.
